Energy Efficient Buildings and Renovations for our Future

Worldwide energy consumption continues to rise in tandem with global population growth, emphasising the increasing importance of energy efficiency as a global megatrend. Homes and businesses are now more than ever focused on adopting eco-friendly and energy-efficient solutions to meet the challenges of a growing population. Numerous practical approaches exist to enhance energy retention and ensure efficient building and home renovations.

Keeping a Roof Cool

In regions with warm climates, the installation of a cool roof stands out as a practical measure to enhance energy efficiency. Cool roofs, composed of materials with high solar reflectance and thermal emittance properties, reflect the sun's ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths, thereby reducing the heat transferred to the space below. This can result in decreased energy consumption for cooling systems, contributing to a more comfortable indoor temperature.

Properly Insulating Systems

Efficient insulation is crucial for reducing heating and cooling costs and enhancing overall comfort in a property. Energy leaks, often from poorly insulated walls, floors, and ceilings, can lead to increased energy bills. Using closed-cell, elastomeric foam insulation like ArmaFlex® on hot and cold water piping and HVAC ducts provides thermal efficiency, preventing condensation and water vapour transmission. This reduces energy consumption and ensures the longevity of the insulation.

Addressing Window Age and Orientation

Older doors, windows, and skylights can contribute to significant energy loss in residential properties. In the U.S. ENERGY STAR certified products are recommended for replacements, offering improved efficiency. As required by the European Commission’s Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, EU Member States have to set cost-optimal minimum energy performance requirements for the replacement of building elements such as windows. Additionally, proper weather-stripping and caulking can be used to seal frame openings, minimising energy wastage. Considering the orientation of windows relative to the sun is also crucial in preventing unnecessary heat gain or loss.

Installing Ceiling Fans and Smart Thermostats

Ceiling fans provide an energy-efficient alternative to constant AC usage, allowing for higher thermostat settings. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, a 2 degree increase in thermostat settings can lead to a 15 percent reduction in energy use. Other global institutes including the European Environment Agency recommend upgrading HVAC systems with programmable smart thermostats enables personalized temperature control, saving energy by adjusting settings based on occupancy and schedule.

Keeping to Code with ArmaFlex

Energy conservation standards and codes, such as ASHRAE 90.1 and the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), play a crucial role in promoting energy efficiency in buildings. Over 80 percent of states have mandatory energy conservation codes, with ASHRAE 90.1 often serving as a basis. In the EU the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and the Energy Efficiency Directive set ambitious efficiency goals for buildings. Understanding and implementing insulation solutions, such as ArmaFlex, aligns with these codes, offering protection against thermal losses in various systems, including chilled water lines, refrigeration lines, plumbing pipes, and HVAC ducts.

A strategic focus on energy-efficient building materials and renovations is beneficial for the present and for a sustainable future. Embracing these solutions contributes to energy conservation, reduced environmental pollution, and significant cost savings for building owners and homeowners alike.
